As you know I love patchwork. I have made clothes and bags, but patchwork is my passion!</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
It all started back in 1996 when I spotted a patchwork quilt in a magazine and immediately bought a small cheep sewing machine. That fist king size quilt has pride of place in my bedroom and is still used to build dens!</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjpOtG-SPHzBAijVImS4hsAkAUk0wf2rGcD3NkxXm9vtjD8JKawfMzeg5w9h3JbdkSku_PI8SD_7WAh01d3iyd2n2eKdrbvSOTeaauOqv3ZJkCzPXT49xXDtIdV_xLO_YuSTQ9xOP2o6Bw/s1600/IMG_1037.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjpOtG-SPHzBAijVImS4hsAkAUk0wf2rGcD3NkxXm9vtjD8JKawfMzeg5w9h3JbdkSku_PI8SD_7WAh01d3iyd2n2eKdrbvSOTeaauOqv3ZJkCzPXT49xXDtIdV_xLO_YuSTQ9xOP2o6Bw/s320/IMG_1037.JPG" width="240" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Faded and worn, but a den building staple!</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
For person who avoided sewing lessons at school because they were for girls that is quite an achievement!</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
When I started patchwork I was determined hand quilter. I couldn't seem to get the machine to quilt in the way I wanted it to, so I stopped trying - I didn't realise I needed special feet and strong enough thread.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
In 2011 that all changed when my youngest son requested a quilt for his birthday which was 3 weeks away. I undertook a self taught crash course in machine quilting. The joy of the internet is that you can find out pretty much anything and I was able to find out why my previous attempts had never worked. The quilt was finished at 2am on his birthday and he still pulls it out to snuggle under whenever he can.<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">My first attempt at free motion quilting!</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
So my free motion journey has been a relatively short one - especially placed in the context of the 20 years I have been making quilts. And it is a journey I have loved. In fact I often love the free motion quilting more than the patchwork. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
As a sewing teacher I have taught free motion quilting to all my patchwork classes. Some students love the challenge and throw themselves in whole heartedly, whilst others give it a go and then run away screaming!</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
It is a hard skills to master - especially on a small domestic machine - but is one that is worth working on. My free motion is not perfect and nor do I ever expect it to be. I have the privilege of knowing that if I select a thread that matches the fabric I am working on then all of my faults will fade into the background of the quilt. They will add texture and interest. Even if the thread doesn't blend in the not so perfect pebble will look perfectly fine in a sea of not so perfect pebbles. They will all look amazing together!<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgT0WfQsRij1-UV-LU6zc9o3jnvJ8goVTWfSLO6v4hlWFQkJLDYJYqgWtEsZAyuR_suJ60NTUjC5D3F5SkfpVhb8jCW4x1CjraiRxSCcBAhJoY7m_kvDhPpk8P2tue-TgBtv7BnRcWX0mk/s1600/IMG_1033.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgT0WfQsRij1-UV-LU6zc9o3jnvJ8goVTWfSLO6v4hlWFQkJLDYJYqgWtEsZAyuR_suJ60NTUjC5D3F5SkfpVhb8jCW4x1CjraiRxSCcBAhJoY7m_kvDhPpk8P2tue-TgBtv7BnRcWX0mk/s320/IMG_1033.JPG" width="240" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">'Mistakes' make up part of the whole design.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
For beginner to free motion quilting this idea of just doing it, ignoring the little 'mistakes' and trusting the journey can be tough. It can cause a project to be rejected. But you must keep going, keep quilting, keep moving forward. Each time to quilt with our machine you are getting better. Each pebble will blend in with the other pebbles. You will never reach perfection but you will create a unique quilt that will wrapped around you family and friends for many years - 20 years and counting in my household.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
When in doubt - just keep quilting!</div>

<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.blogger.com/blogger.g?blogID=3147240448078394046" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"></a><a href="https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/6/68/Stroud_High_Street.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/6/68/Stroud_High_Street.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
As with any changes all of this has taken a toll on our family. We love where we now live in Stroud. It has taken 5 months but we finally feel at home. It is a great town with lovely walks into town and all sorts of lovely shops.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<img alt="Image result for images of stroud" src="https://encrypted-tbn3.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcR42dIHXeRpjYgRkaFdzFdPe-G3TvUPcimkC3G-d1EFPM24Ev7H" /></div>
<br />
The rest of life is settling down, but we have had to make some changes. The boys have stopped Saturday morning activities for a little while - family time has been needed to help us all settle in.<br />
<br />
And I have made the decision in the last 2 weeks that my creativity has taken a nose dive in the last 18 months through work pressures, teaching commitments and life! Like so many of you I can't function without being creative. It is part of my soul and without working on something creative my brain starts to suffer...... I suffer!<br />
<br />
So..... I have decided to stop teaching. I love teaching and passing on my skills and creating fabric addicts! But I NEED to work on my own creations. I want to finish my City and Guilds, I want to create new items and I want finish my stack of half finished quilts.... I want to do something for me!<br />
<br />
It has been a hard decision and I am heart broken to leave my students, but having made a commitment to look after myself more I feel better already.<br />

<br />
Just some of the things I have been doing since my decision to slow down: crochet (3 blankets on the go at once), bread making and finishing the quilt top for my Tulip Medallion quilt.<br />
<br />
Sometimes hard decisions lead to a happier life.... a hopefully a more creative life!<br />

<br />
Over the Easter break we were told we needed to leave our much loved home in Tetbury. Our landlord had decided to sell the house. Unfortunately the rental rates in Tetbury had risen beyond my income so we had to make the heart breaking decision to leave Tetbury and start again somewhere...<br />
<br />
After looking at our options we decided as a family that Stroud would be the best place for us - midi and mini attend groups here and maxi needs to the train line to get his new College in Swindon. As in most places rental properties appear on the internet and then disappear in hours so we were very fortunate to find a four bed Victorian terrace in our budget.<br />
<br />
So four months on we are semi settled into our new home and life in Stroud. New schools and finding new friends has been a journey with lots of tears, but we are slowly putting down roots.<br />
<br />
In the move I lost my beloved studio.... it really did make a weep! Now I have a very small space in my bedroom with lots of fabric in bags and equipment everywhere.<br />
<br />
I have been focusing on the Medallion Quilt to get me through the settling in process. Sewing has always been my refuge when things around me are changing. It helps me to anchor myself when all around me is swirling.<br />
<br />
Here is the progress I have made:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><br /></td></tr>

<br />
I love the way that the quilt is growing and the fabrics by Blueberry Park are simply beautiful.<br />
<br />
I think this is last layer of design and I am really excited to be entering the final phase of the patchwork design. Next to write the instructions for the quilt so I can start teaching the design in three weeks.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
I hope you like it too!</div>

<br />
I made a <a href="http://www.quiltingalongthegrain.blogspot.co.uk/2014/03/a-special-quilt.html" target="_blank">Marcella Medallion</a> by Alexia Abegg in 2014 for a fabulouc friend who turned 40. The quilt is being loved and used by my friend and family - including the dog!<br />
<br />
When I finished the quilt I had plans to make another medallion quilt for another friend who also turned 40 in 2014. But I had run out of mojo and inspiration by then ,I couldn't find the right fabric and pattern. It felt like I was wading through design treacle!<br />
<br />
Then I saw the <a href="http://www.quiltingalongthegrain.blogspot.co.uk/2015/12/blueberry-park-fabric.html" target="_blank">Blueberry Fabric</a> by Karen Lewis, and I was totally smitten!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgcgyUUAM3cWOgZFSxNLZYuN68FCVyXDuWf2Y-YPD4nCParfvCeXpl05x6VoUMSUFhjwzaMfMM7c6DpETRqkKuX8EBXBTQDq_GisF8iYxuriGfg2_Jpll9-b9jfkjpnMQxQr-t0eShteAs/s1600/20151215_190818000_iOS.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgcgyUUAM3cWOgZFSxNLZYuN68FCVyXDuWf2Y-YPD4nCParfvCeXpl05x6VoUMSUFhjwzaMfMM7c6DpETRqkKuX8EBXBTQDq_GisF8iYxuriGfg2_Jpll9-b9jfkjpnMQxQr-t0eShteAs/s320/20151215_190818000_iOS.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
I bought some grey Kona - Silver, Iron and Steel to be exact. I like the contrast in the brights of the pink/red and the grey. I then bought the plain Kona fabric to match the Blueberry Park and the Fog pattern from Blueberry Fabric. Now I have bundle of fabrics, both solid colour and patterned.<br />
<br />
But what about a quilt design?<br />
<br />
I wanted a central star again and I found the wonderful paper piece patterns by <a href="http://wombatquilts.com/2015/04/13/ellens-snowball/" target="_blank">Wombat Quilts</a>. If you have never visited Wombat Quilts you are in for a treat. Cath Hall as has gathered a fabulous collection of paper pieced patterns for anyone access. I love this one:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://wombatquilts.files.wordpress.com/2015/04/ellens-snowball-block.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="316" src="https://wombatquilts.files.wordpress.com/2015/04/ellens-snowball-block.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
It is called <a href="http://wombatquilts.com/2015/04/13/ellens-snowball/" target="_blank">Ellen's Snowball </a>and there an instructions for 12" and 16" blocks. I have chosen the 16".<br />
<br />
Next up was getting the quilt designed around the central block... for this the amazing app <a href="http://elevenworks.com/touchdraw/ipad/" target="_blank">TouchDraw</a> comes in very useful!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj_HhUJ25orRubel-fIaa1foQoAfdZ2bwl88ncyvWUuyqsM03W4tuwN9nNLo1meSF6Je67DeySUhQhp8yfdsQSX-YUwR_QIAUhPiAUpL_38mfJfDVerUSRgDQ7MPn5mwly0v9OvJ-bbr-Q/s1600/medallion+quilt+design.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="398" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj_HhUJ25orRubel-fIaa1foQoAfdZ2bwl88ncyvWUuyqsM03W4tuwN9nNLo1meSF6Je67DeySUhQhp8yfdsQSX-YUwR_QIAUhPiAUpL_38mfJfDVerUSRgDQ7MPn5mwly0v9OvJ-bbr-Q/s400/medallion+quilt+design.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
There is a mixture of simple sewing, paper piecing and some blocks I am still figuring out how to piece...<br />
<br />
So the journey begins with a central star.... hopefully it will end with a finished quilt by October 2016 when my friend turns 42!<br />
<br />

<br />
My tiny sewing fund has been limited to materials for my City and Guilds.<br />
<br />
That all changed when I found out the lovely <a href="http://blueberry-park.blogspot.co.uk/" target="_blank">Karen Lewis of Blueberrry Park</a> had her first fabric line coming out. It started a bit of an obsessive searching to find the prints and the things that people have been sewing with it!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.robertkaufman.com/assets/images/ad_swatch/1447319895.hp_lms_blueberrrypark.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://www.robertkaufman.com/assets/images/ad_swatch/1447319895.hp_lms_blueberrrypark.jpg" height="162" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I have a few scrap pieces of Karen's screen printed fabric which I am treasuring until I have the perfect plan for them, so I knew I HAD to have the collection of fabric.... but how to afford it?</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Having just a few fat quarters wasn't going to cut it, I NEED to have the whole collection...</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
That's when the amazing UK shop that is <a href="http://www.simplysolids.co.uk/" target="_blank">Simply Solids</a> came to the rescue. They have a wonderful monthly Blueberry Park club. Seven fabrics from the collection each month, over ten months. So I can get the whole range and spread the payments - what's not to love?!?!?</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This week the first bundle from Simply Solids arrived and I am in love! Seriously in love!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The first seven are from the selection above and they are gorgeous!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I have a plan for them already. I missed a very dear friends 40th birthday last year. I had planned to give her a quilt, but I just didn't manage it. I want to design and make a medallion quilt for her and these fabrics are just perfect. Maybe I didn't manage it last year because I knew Karen was going to bring me inspiration with her fabulous fabric line!</div>

<br />
<span id="goog_470032010"></span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEht-4PWv50SR5CCSZuyotsSTCtx-viHz2taOQqVMzvATX5J6gWpvWZUFaSn3vR92ZRsyQ58VJqEyXyEWEBp3gXaxdj_KoBpoXOclmCvF_4PuldAX8pjiLlajEMTsArxSDfbICb9Hqm-cZU/s1600/20151204_205427000_iOS.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEht-4PWv50SR5CCSZuyotsSTCtx-viHz2taOQqVMzvATX5J6gWpvWZUFaSn3vR92ZRsyQ58VJqEyXyEWEBp3gXaxdj_KoBpoXOclmCvF_4PuldAX8pjiLlajEMTsArxSDfbICb9Hqm-cZU/s400/20151204_205427000_iOS.jpg" width="300" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The pattern by <a href="http://www.ohfransson.com/" target="_blank">Elizabeth Hartman</a> was really easy to follow but the cutting out was quite intense because there are pretty small pieces of fabric!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I made the bottom of the bunnies face a little bit bigger so he has a nice chubby face.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Once I had finished the piecing I decided to not quilt the bunnies face apart from the nose and some whiskers. I then concentrated on the background. Into to this I quilted carrots and swirls. A bunny needs carrots after all!</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<br />
<br />
The picture of the finished cushion is not great - no light here today!<br />
<br />

It is the 10th birthday of his best friend.<br />
<br />
You may not know this, but midi monster is a very talent young sewer. He can happily set up a sewing machine and can sew patchwork blocks, quilt and make simple things. His best friend is also a young sewer, he has helped his mum set up her machine and discover stitches she didn't even know about! They both attended sewing classes with me earlier this year and loved it.<br />
<br />
But what to give a young man that will be meaningful and not too expensive?<br />
<br />
The obvious answer is a quilted bunny cushion to go on his bed!<br />
<br />
During an search on the internet last weekend we came across a wonderful pattern sale last weekend at <a href="http://www.ohfransson.com/blog/" target="_blank">Oh Fransson</a>, the wonderful blog written by <a href="http://www.ohfransson.com/bio/" target="_blank">Elizabeth Hartman</a>.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.ohfransson.com/" target="_blank">Elizabeth Hartman</a> designs the most amazing blocks and quilts. Her new animal shape blocks are gorgeous and luckily there is <a href="http://ohfransson.bigcartel.com/product/bunny-pdf-quilt-pattern" target="_blank">bunny one</a>!<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Bunny pattern by Elizabeth Hartman</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />Just look at those amazing bunnies!<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
This evening we have printed the pattern off and sat discussing the cutting instructions for one bunny. After much consideration it was decided that mummy should cut out the required shapes - they are little bit fiddly.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
So begins the first new project in quite sometime..... plus a short deadline! Must be ready for the birthday party at 11am on Sunday!</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Wish us luck!</div>

<br />
It has been a year since I stopped teaching for Adult Education Gloucestershire and started working at a community hub.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjZr2W_ICt4ETsLbc77UTk-4an5P1KHuAbUcUy_IJcLZsPrmkqYVKr38pt0gltmrY7tAly0CIGkP7cU_ogrEUkaiKMY5BNPZtIrIPv2UsNRxX7QKA8FHymutPqT57TGpiy3iQBOFfXGdyc/s1600/20150831_201848000_iOS.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjZr2W_ICt4ETsLbc77UTk-4an5P1KHuAbUcUy_IJcLZsPrmkqYVKr38pt0gltmrY7tAly0CIGkP7cU_ogrEUkaiKMY5BNPZtIrIPv2UsNRxX7QKA8FHymutPqT57TGpiy3iQBOFfXGdyc/s400/20150831_201848000_iOS.jpg" width="300" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Module 6 Course Sampler</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
A whole year!<br />
<br />
In that time my creativity and energy has been failing me. I thought it was because of the change in work and the new responsibilities that I have. My energy to blog, sew and keep up with the boys just disappeared.<br />
<br />
Then in the summer I tried to give blood and they wouldn't let me because I failed the anaemia test. They suggested a visit to the doctors to confirm my levels. Turns out I am extremely anaemic! The kind of anaenic that involves huge iron tablets 3 times a day and sleeping 16 out of 24 hours a day!<br />

The last 2 months have been a long haul back from being so poorly. My energy levels are slowly growing and I only need an afternoon nap at weekends!<br />
<br />
The biggest problem has been the loss of my sewing mojo. It has just disappeared. I have so many quilts in progress and course work to complete...<br />

<br />
My job has expanded and changed, which is fantastic and I love it! But it has led to less time for me to create.... and less time to complete the work load that is a level 3 certificate.<br />
<br />
BUT I am still working, slowly, steadily and in every spare moment that I can!<br />
<br />
Module 5 was all about form and focused on the Media. I am not going to lie - it took me AGES!<br />
<br />
But I think the results were worth the perseverance and time:<br />

It is a job a love and builds on the teaching I have done in communities around the county.<br />
<br />
It has meant a massive shift in how my family works, I no longer have the freedom to manage my time that I had as a freelance teacher. It has been a major adjustment for us all, but one we have all come through still smiling!<br />
<br />
I have been teaching around the hours I work - 3 after school clubs and weekend classes!<br />
<br />
My monthly sampler class has just had it's 6th class and we have a selection of gorgeous blocks. We now have the fun job of creating the quilt top and exploring machine quilting. Another round of this class will start in September - more info soon!<br />

It has been a long time since I lasted posted a here.... infact it has been five and a bit months!<br />
<br />
It was never a break I had planned - infact I had ideas lined up and things to show you. Then everything changed... and even when things settled down I found I was afraid to come back to my blog - sounds silly doesn't it?<br />
<br />
But at 5.30am on a cold Monday morning, I have beaten the fear and wanted to say hello to the people who are still visiting my humble blog!<br />
<br />
I have loads to share from the 5 months, sewing adventures and course work, which I plan to blog over the coming weeks.<br />
<br />
Thank you for still visiting my humble blog - now the first step has been taken the next few are much easier!<br />

A year seems to have gone by so fast - although sometimes it has felt very slow!<br />
<br />
I have moved so far from my starting point that when I look back I am slightly shocked! When I started last August I was in a panic, it all seemed so hard and my dream seemed impossible. One year on, and 4 modules completed, I feel ore confident of my skills and that my dream is almost on the horizon...<br />
<br />
It has not been easy though. Teaching lots of classes, looking after 3 boys, being a Scout leader and working through the course has left me very little time to think! It feels worth it though!<br />
<br />
So to year 2... well, there is one more design module looking at Form and then I get to work through my designs to create 3D pieces of work. They look scary when I look at them in my student booklets.... but oh so exciting!<br />
<br />
I am also turning towards the new teaching year and I have been working hard to pull together a fun and versatile teaching schedule. I will be sending out the details of classes and workshops in a newsletter tomorrow, so if you want to receive the newsletter just drop me an email:<a href="mailto:quiltingthegrain@btinternet.com" target="_blank"> quiltingthegrain@btinternet.com</a>.<br />

<br />
I get to buy lots of different types of fabric and often I buy things that don't suit my taste, but my students turn them into amazing items!<br />
<br />
I am always on the lookout for new places to buy fabric and to be able to recommend to my classes. Over the last week I have ordered from a shop I have been following for a while on social media - <a href="http://www.plushaddict.co.uk/" target="_blank">Plush Addict</a>.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.plushaddict.co.uk/skin/frontend/default/plush_addict/images/logo.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://www.plushaddict.co.uk/skin/frontend/default/plush_addict/images/logo.png" height="162" title="" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
They have a wonderful range of wonderful fabrics including all the latest designer ranges.<br />
<br />
I needed a whole collection of Kona Solids for a class I am teaching tomorrow. We have been making wonderful cushion covers with a eight point star. The fronts have a mix of pattern and Kona solids.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.plushaddict.co.uk/media/kona.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://www.plushaddict.co.uk/media/kona.png" height="182" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
I hadn't realised that <a href="http://www.plushaddict.co.uk/" target="_blank">Plush Addict</a> carried all 277 Kona solids until last week when I managed to get hold of some much needed Bone. They delivered the order so quickly I knew I had the right place to order fabric for my class.<br />
<br />
So on Friday morning I started shopping - £89 later I put a quick note on the order saying I needed the fabric by Tuesday morning did they think I needed to pay for tracked deliver.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.plushaddict.co.uk/media/catalog/product/cache/1/image/302x302/9df78eab33525d08d6e5fb8d27136e95/k/a/kahuna.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://www.plushaddict.co.uk/media/catalog/product/cache/1/image/302x302/9df78eab33525d08d6e5fb8d27136e95/k/a/kahuna.png" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
To my delight the bundle arrived on Monday morning with a wonderful note and a bag of sweeties!<br />
<br />
So pleased with they service and the selection they carry!<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.plushaddict.co.uk/" target="_blank">Go check them out</a>!<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
We will be learning how to make 2 different blocks each month that will build over the course of the 6 months into a gorgeous sampler quilt.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhtehZLGrfVyY2NkoMOzI0dJf1tO6mvDauARMbW9dOfJangZWmwPFwUZU4fKfzs0ysmymFZA-7ZlL7GGcwlmayKKdIhIb2aN5TiLQs0SzG1c205VbwzMpnPDM9G71vxb9lgHZCnwM2Efj8/s1600/IMG_1734.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhtehZLGrfVyY2NkoMOzI0dJf1tO6mvDauARMbW9dOfJangZWmwPFwUZU4fKfzs0ysmymFZA-7ZlL7GGcwlmayKKdIhIb2aN5TiLQs0SzG1c205VbwzMpnPDM9G71vxb9lgHZCnwM2Efj8/s1600/IMG_1734.JPG" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
After we have made the quilt top, we will be learning how to sandwich the quilt and machine quilt. By the end of the 10 month course you will have a wonderful patchwork quilt and all the skills you need to make more patchwork quilts at home.</div>

<br />
But waking at 4.30am ish has some advantages...<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<i>the house is super quiet,</i></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<i>I get to listen to my boys sleeping and dreaming,</i></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<i>a mug of tea with no pestering is bliss,</i></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<i>I can work through my course work,</i></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<i>I can make plans for what I want to try next....</i></div>
<br />
Trying to put the time to good use is important me, otherwise I feel frustrated that I am just sitting there!<br />
<br />
So this morning I was up at 4.15am and lay in bed for a while, then started planning my day.<br />
<br />
After out textile trail day I have been researching natural dyes and how to prepare fabric to dye with leaves and flowers. The effects are really stunning.<br />
<br />
One of the things I have discovered is that shop bought cotton needs to scoured before it can be used for dyeing. Even when it has been machine washed it still has chemicals and additives in the cloth that stop the dyes from fixing permanently to the fibres. I have been using Prepared For Dyeing (PFD) fabrics, but having run out I picked up some cheap cotton from Ikea to have a dyeing session.<br />
<br />
I wanted to dye some black and charcoal for my course work, which needs to be worked in black, white and grey only.<br />
<br />
As you can see the results were varied:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhigc8__EZPf4vauv3fcgwEq-ACUyFFk591K5s4J1Mj-bGZ8ZVryi7ogYB6gl0dw_0IuyFa9tIPfEGAQjwMCMDPFcE26pC14-XEZhFysTkhOAT3-8YKyrZwXhnCx5QvuXVFGfFGuWNka_o/s1600/IMG_0343.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhigc8__EZPf4vauv3fcgwEq-ACUyFFk591K5s4J1Mj-bGZ8ZVryi7ogYB6gl0dw_0IuyFa9tIPfEGAQjwMCMDPFcE26pC14-XEZhFysTkhOAT3-8YKyrZwXhnCx5QvuXVFGfFGuWNka_o/s1600/IMG_0343.JPG" height="640" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
The fabrics are top left to right: Hessian, PFD cotton organdie, Ikea calico. Bottom Left to right: cotton scrim, Ikea cotton and PDF natural cotton.<br />
<br />
They were all placed in the same dye bag and the hessian and organdie have absorbed the most black dye. The others came out grey and the Ikea cotton was variegated. Even those these are pretty cool I want more black!<br />
<br />
The charcoal came out much better:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi9LJrfMeJovpMVX3ic4WIYlfiNthWCO2B7FYTbMA7GnwUDhi2hw5G9hfESFIa7-LWsP6LpaK9VkZtPuXDLx83TQjYH9qgBoALJwkjInYLo3o-g5upKK5fWAsF1ObzN8GSpC1RXzRtwR-M/s1600/IMG_0344.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi9LJrfMeJovpMVX3ic4WIYlfiNthWCO2B7FYTbMA7GnwUDhi2hw5G9hfESFIa7-LWsP6LpaK9VkZtPuXDLx83TQjYH9qgBoALJwkjInYLo3o-g5upKK5fWAsF1ObzN8GSpC1RXzRtwR-M/s1600/IMG_0344.JPG" height="640" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
The Ikea cotton, which is quiet thickly woven came out blotchy again.<br />
<br />
So at 6am I decided it was time to try scouring my fabric form Ikea and some cotton organdie. I know 6am is totally crazy!<br />
<br />
It is a interesting process that requires Soda Ash, Metapex, water and time to simmer the fabric for at least an hour!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiGSYM6wzlTBuxcgi-pHqGeIX7PF2YOA7YyDaK3D2JUIdEhNvcCHLD3gBc5piaJbMnOTKddszL46xE2lJ7bPvQuwrhtOrJHvt7cjOk_6ESqyYw48-0hwbCv8DSioUwMIgH_K9MIhIQ_03Y/s1600/IMG_0342.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiGSYM6wzlTBuxcgi-pHqGeIX7PF2YOA7YyDaK3D2JUIdEhNvcCHLD3gBc5piaJbMnOTKddszL46xE2lJ7bPvQuwrhtOrJHvt7cjOk_6ESqyYw48-0hwbCv8DSioUwMIgH_K9MIhIQ_03Y/s1600/IMG_0342.JPG" height="640" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
This is the second pot full this morning and is the Ikea calico. I am hoping this works because this is cheerfully cheap and took the colour well last time, just want to see if I can improve it!<br />
<br />
The other Ikea cotton and organdie are drying on the line...<br />
<br />
Fingers crossed this works!<br />
<br />
Can I also say that I am expecially proud of my dyeing book?<br />

Lots of experiments and colours! Need a new book soon!<br />
<br />
Also mixed some Manutex dye thickening paste this morning which is currently being stored in clean margarine tubs... best label them before the boys put some on their toast!<br />

It is a fabulous trail around some of the amazing textile artist and ceramists of the area.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.sitselect.org/images/trailcover.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://www.sitselect.org/images/trailcover.jpg" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
We sat down yesterday with our book and circled the studios we wanted to visit. For an 8 year old he is quite opinionated about the trail! We chose a mix of textile artists and ceramists - he loves all things pottery!<br />
<br />
We also plotted the best places to stop of cake and lunch - a major highlight of the day for him!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgy_R_BT6W_5XJjTBKeu9n_5mvanfFYB6wMvxBI8llPIMP-z6G-7IlOmsa1_o2GGWGgp4ZKo_hzUpsDPYg6Hdcd3j-A94Zu2rHCL5WxZNG5Lbk7uokDaa9yeOB_VvENg8CbBAAMjXX-Aqw/s1600/photo+(6).JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgy_R_BT6W_5XJjTBKeu9n_5mvanfFYB6wMvxBI8llPIMP-z6G-7IlOmsa1_o2GGWGgp4ZKo_hzUpsDPYg6Hdcd3j-A94Zu2rHCL5WxZNG5Lbk7uokDaa9yeOB_VvENg8CbBAAMjXX-Aqw/s1600/photo+(6).JPG" height="400" width="300" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
We started at Ruskin Mill in Nailsworth with<a href="http://www.taylored-felt.com/" target="_blank"> Helen Taylor</a> and <a href="http://clareherrington.co.uk/Clare_Herrington_Textiles/Home.html" target="_blank">Clare Herrington</a>. Their fabulous studio is full of amazing felted scarves, owls and bags! It was a great place to start.<br />
<br />
Then we went to Stroud to visit <a href="http://www.matthewharriscloth.co.uk/" target="_blank">Matthew Harris</a>. His work is really inspiring and I was so excited to see his work in black and white. His studio was an amazing space with an grass roof!<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.matthewharriscloth.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/echo-2-thumb.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="http://www.matthewharriscloth.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/echo-2-thumb.jpg" height="197" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Echo no IIII by Matthew Harris</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
Also on the same path were a couple of Ceramists, including Noah's favourite of the day <a href="http://www.tarajaneceramics.com/" target="_blank">Tara Davidson</a>.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">By Tara Davidson</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
<br />
We then went to visit <a href="http://www.alicefox.co.uk/" target="_blank">Alice Fox's </a>exhibition, Tide Marks.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.alicefox.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/Alice-Fox-Tide-Marks-at-Lansdown-Gallery-Stroud-2-1024x817.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="http://www.alicefox.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/Alice-Fox-Tide-Marks-at-Lansdown-Gallery-Stroud-2-1024x817.jpg" height="318" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Tide Marks by Alice Fox</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
It was amazing. Alice's work is full of texture, marks and rust printing love it!<br />
<br />
This morning Noah made the decision that we needed to have lunch at the <a href="http://www.lavenderbakehouse.co.uk/" target="_blank">Lavender Bakehouse</a> in Chalford. They have the most amazing panini's with huge salads!<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhrB-1jnundI6hXDbQgnglSUlQLwmpAPmjDEDsxfTDzTwRTC5TzKPBMQLa4kiiFTzGO00ImauEe-ayOXmmky_yN0FYVo87q4IB4Wic4lT6oaa21QYNUTqetnmyXgE1NlZElVNGfNM1utso/s1600/photo+(3).JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhrB-1jnundI6hXDbQgnglSUlQLwmpAPmjDEDsxfTDzTwRTC5TzKPBMQLa4kiiFTzGO00ImauEe-ayOXmmky_yN0FYVo87q4IB4Wic4lT6oaa21QYNUTqetnmyXgE1NlZElVNGfNM1utso/s1600/photo+(3).JPG" height="400" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Opportunity for more cake.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
Our final stop of the day was the amazing <a href="http://www.dyeworks.co.uk/index.html" target="_blank">Polly Lyster</a> and her husband. Polly is an amazing dyer, using indigo and other natural dyes to create amazing fabric.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.dyeworks.co.uk/images/colourstack2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="http://www.dyeworks.co.uk/images/colourstack2.jpg" height="400" width="156" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Dyeworks</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
They had an indigo dye vat set up in the garden and Noah had the opportunity to dye a cotton scarf. I think he dyed most of himself too!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgFAWAfIyhRNxg2Luxjh1jjCIIRkbsYtrVI17GuFofSXg6W8R4vKQfbdLrgumQxwexYSp0XqS1q2ZB-jBt0emRIdr-yWzKgZbe-jb0GD58DRWMdFgh_YiHs0zOGn6CllnGHkcDjy2I8CI4/s1600/photo+(2).JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgFAWAfIyhRNxg2Luxjh1jjCIIRkbsYtrVI17GuFofSXg6W8R4vKQfbdLrgumQxwexYSp0XqS1q2ZB-jBt0emRIdr-yWzKgZbe-jb0GD58DRWMdFgh_YiHs0zOGn6CllnGHkcDjy2I8CI4/s1600/photo+(2).JPG" height="400" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
He was so proud of his first attempt at dyeing and I was drooling over the amazing colours that natural dyes can produce!<br />
<br />
We drove home inspired and very excited about all the textiles we had seen! Noah now has a list of things he would like to felt and dye!<br />
<br />
If you live near it is worth watching out for the trail details next year. It is already in our diary for next year!<br />

<br />
I teach all my beginners how to make half square triangles (HST). They are the most versatile building block in patchwork and lead easily to lots of different designs.<br />
<br />
I thought I would collate some fabulous quilts made using HST as their base unit as inspiration for all those new to HST!<br />

<br />
Stroud is 10 miles away and has a wonderful <a href="http://www.stroudinternationaltextiles.org.uk/" target="_blank">International Textiles Festival</a> every May.<br />
<br />
They have exhibitions, talks and 2 Open Studio weekends!<br />
<br />
Last Saturday I was able to get a ticket to a talk by my favourite fabric dyer, <a href="http://www.prismtextiles.co.uk/IssettR/IssettR.html" target="_blank">Ruth Issett</a>.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.prismtextiles.co.uk/IssettR/files/block_3/80023DE9-IssettR3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://www.prismtextiles.co.uk/IssettR/files/block_3/80023DE9-IssettR3.jpg" height="266" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Her work is inspirational and so bright!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.prismtextiles.co.uk/IssettR/files/block_3/63849DBB-IssettR2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://www.prismtextiles.co.uk/IssettR/files/block_3/63849DBB-IssettR2.jpg" height="266" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
I have managed to buy all her books over the last few months and I use her book <a href="http://www.amazon.co.uk/Colour-Cloth-Ruth-Issett/dp/1906388342/ref=sr_1_3?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1400239909&sr=1-3&keywords=ruth+issett" target="_blank">Colour on Cloth</a> whenever I am dyeing fabric. It is full of dye recipes, methods and inspiration!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.studiopreniac.com/gallery_images/ruth_issett/ri_8.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://www.studiopreniac.com/gallery_images/ruth_issett/ri_8.jpg" height="302" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
During her talk she explained some of her processes and her inspiration. She is very passionate about colour and exploring it's uses. I really enjoyed the talk and learning how an experienced textile artist works.<br />
<br />
I love being able to explore how other artists work. Midi and I are off the on textile trail together on Sunday. We have a list of artist we want to visit and places to stop off for yummy cake... it is going to be so much fun!!!<br />

<br />
<a href="http://www.dollybobbins.co.uk/" target="_blank">Dolly Bobbins</a> is a gorgeous yarn and craft shop, with a great space for teaching! The lovely owner Tracey contacted me after a student had recommended me as a sewing teaching.<br />
<br />
Luckily Tracey liked my ideas for classes and my totally obvious fabric addiction and we agreed some classes for May, which I thought I would share with you!<br />

<br />
I love colour and have 3/4 books by my bed all about the chemistry of colour, the meaning of colour and the development of synthetic pigments.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhTST47zDx_PKwVRsBIGaJtBevWba1kyfjvyWtR-RlPITQunBFLDqbNoucgVApLohd1ElGcAS2tFwVmy2qnPwkQXXm49CgMfDdx1SB4gaUMCv4SUbkQ2wV-y7IYugF0fAeBnaMfSDvTtyk/s1600/DSCF5133.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhTST47zDx_PKwVRsBIGaJtBevWba1kyfjvyWtR-RlPITQunBFLDqbNoucgVApLohd1ElGcAS2tFwVmy2qnPwkQXXm49CgMfDdx1SB4gaUMCv4SUbkQ2wV-y7IYugF0fAeBnaMfSDvTtyk/s1600/DSCF5133.JPG" height="300" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
As usual I had to investigate colour, which was fun! Then I had to choose an artist to research. In February I visited a exhibition about Henri Matisse's paper cuts at Strouds Museum in the Park.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiKpOE3b3W6DdO-94ElHa1whMedcdGPm-9nvsnIMgV9A-lOqXsJVn8JZ70CNVpNA7jv6aKdqNx62_4bpCn6herEcoVyiq_Ak7t_WinUIbdhL6x-qVvYTNn6jzdI7Ou8zboqch1Kc6Eoce4/s1600/DSCF5276.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiKpOE3b3W6DdO-94ElHa1whMedcdGPm-9nvsnIMgV9A-lOqXsJVn8JZ70CNVpNA7jv6aKdqNx62_4bpCn6herEcoVyiq_Ak7t_WinUIbdhL6x-qVvYTNn6jzdI7Ou8zboqch1Kc6Eoce4/s1600/DSCF5276.JPG" height="400" width="300" /></a></div>
<br />
His paper cuts were completed when he was too ill to paint and sculpt, but the need to create art remained. With the help of an assistant he used paper to create huge murals, that were colourful and vibrant:<br />
<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">La Gerbe, Henri Matisse (1953)</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
I love the mix of colours and the scale of the original pieces is huge!<br />
<br />
As well as exploring colour I had to develop the portfolio using a historical theme. I visited Bath and took lots of photos of the gorgeous Georgian buildings and the Fashion Museum. The course notes suggested developing a design around a piece of historical textiles. I chose an 18th Century embroidered ribbon:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgm9TO7y3pqujD1xhUtdj1mTyvziN3c3zhYLDt6c92IEOjbw1PNo7XAduy4M54Qdm0LhJqVtok_5D0QF9SkvBRex9LdUjWO99RTxupVDd3_bWqVorWIpztjKiZIpzJK4i0eVWKLWw3n3f8/s1600/DSCF5170.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgm9TO7y3pqujD1xhUtdj1mTyvziN3c3zhYLDt6c92IEOjbw1PNo7XAduy4M54Qdm0LhJqVtok_5D0QF9SkvBRex9LdUjWO99RTxupVDd3_bWqVorWIpztjKiZIpzJK4i0eVWKLWw3n3f8/s1600/DSCF5170.JPG" height="400" width="300" /></a></div>
<br />
From this I explored colouring pencils, felt tip pens and paint!<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
I experimented with hand dyeing different weights of fabric, threads, bubble wrap and postcards. It was great fun and I really love the final piece.<br />
<br />
Next it's Texture and Landscapes/Geological.... and it has to be done in black and white! So exciting!<br />

<br />
Before the Easter madness started, I sneaked off to Bath for a bit of time to myself. Whenever I am in Bath I have to visit <a href="http://www.countrythreadspatchwork.co.uk/" target="_blank">Country Threads</a>. It is my favourite local quilt shop and is a MUST if you visit Bath.<br />
<br />
After a little shop I headed off to <a href="http://americanmuseum.org/about-the-museum/current-exhibitions/kaffe-2014-the-colourful-world-of-kaffe-fassett/" target="_blank">The American Museum</a> to visit the <a href="http://www.kaffefassett.com/Home.html" target="_blank">Kaffe Fassett</a> exhibition.<br />
