It's all gone hexy...

For the last few months I have slowly been working on my EPP for my HexyMF quilt along.

Slowly putting the hexagons together into flowers:

Th plan had been to put them together according to the Hexy MF pattern, but since have put together 40 flowers I have changed my mind...

When I put them on the design wall to have a look at, I moved them around and decided I would like to try a different layout:

The idea is to have hexagons, single flowers and flowers placed into bigger hexagons.... this had led me to having to decide how to put the hexagons together...

I either attach them to a single background or make more hexagons using the background fabric and grow the quilt slowly.

Being me I opted for the second option! So have started cutting out hexagons from my precious Mode Weave so I can start putting the quilt together... I may be some time!

Quilt Along - Progress!

Awhile ago I started my first quilt along - the Hexy MF quilt along.

I have never had a go at English paper piecing before so I was very excited to give it ago, especialy as part of a quilt along - another first for me!

The fabrics I am using are from the fabulous Lucie Summers and her Summerville range for Moda.

I have been quietly working away and managed to put together 20 ish flowers:

They are looking lush!

I am really enjoying piecing them in quiet times when watching TV or in my sewing classes on Thursday - the girls are quilting their quilts so need little input from me!

 

I have also used a few new bits of sewing equipment with varying success... will let you know my thoughts on them!

My First Quilt Along Part 1

In all the years I have been a quilter, I have never taken part in a quilt along.

The Internet has changed the face of quilting so much - people from around the world can connect in an instant and share their hobbies. Having virtual quilting bees and quilt along groups has never been easier!

When I saw the Hexy MF quilt along on the Fat Quarterly Blog and I'm A Ginger Monkey blog I just knew I had to give it a go.

The pattern is so gorgeous and involved LOTS of hexagons hand sewn together - perfect for me as a contrast to the long days I spend at my sewing machine.

It took me a while to decide the fabrics I would like to use... but I finally decided on the Summersville collect from Lucie Summers.

I got my selection from the fabulous Alice at Backstitch, but you can also get them from Lucie direct at her Etsy shop - I have some gorgeous orange coming in the post!

Armed with my templates from I'm A Ginger Monkey I have started to cut the hexagons out:

There is something very therapeutic about cutting hexagons...

I have started to turn the seam allowances so I have ready to go hexagons....

I am really enjoying working on the quilt. It has come in very handy this week, when I have 3 cracked ribs following a fall and I can't sit upright at a sewing machine for a few days....
