Taking Photos

I come from a family filled with photographers.

In fact I am the only one who doesn't know what she is doing when she wields a camera!

My dad has a blog all about our families history and association with a camera going back to 1908.

My sister is amazing with a camera - check out her site.

So when I saw the new link up on Plum and June I was really excited - maybe I could finally get some tips on using my camera.

So far it has inspired me to start adjusting the setting on my camera and I might even try and find the book that came with the camera!

I played around with the aperture, shutter speed and ISO. Not sure what they all do yet, but I have enjoyed seeing the changes in the photo outcomes!

None of these are processed, just straight from the camera.

I love the ability to influence the brightness of the photos using the changes in aperture and shutter speed. It was great fun to play around!

The fabrics are from the Koi collection by Rashida Coleman-Hale at M is for Make. They are really stunning!

Now I need to make a note of the settings I like and practice more!

I missed the link-up on Plum and June, hopefully I manage to get organised for next month.

Photos!

I mentioned at the weekend that one of my January goals is to work on my photography skills for the blog.

I find quilts quite hard to take photograph, plus the light in the UK is none existent at this time of year - it is wall to wall grey clouds!

So I have started investigating the processes and found these blogs:

I found Bijou Lovely when I signed the Process Pledge earlier in the week. Holly has written a fabulous blog post sharing her 10 Tips for Better Blog Photos. She shares all her tips and tricks for getting the best out your camera and creations. If you read her blog you her pictures are amazing, so she is the perfect tutor!

I also found this really comprehensive about taking photos, including lighting and hanging quilts:

Called Shoot That Quilt, the blog post is written by Andy Braid and Holly Knott. It a fantastic on line resource about taking photos with so much information that it is going to take more than one sitting to read it all....

How do you photograph your work?

Have you got any tips you are willing to share?

Goals to Achieve....

I don't really believe in New Years Resolutions... in the past I have set so many - get fitter, diet, do this, do that... then I fail by 3rd January and used to feel totally lost... useless!

Now I just write myself a list of goals each month, they help me to focus at the start of the month on what I want to achieve. Plus it means you can set little targets and get a sense of achievement by completing them...

So each month I will be recording my goals here so I can see how I am doing...

January

1. Write more comments on other peoples blogs

I have been reading other peoples blogs for months, and I never have the confidence to comment. This month I aim to leave one comment a day for a fellow blogger - something to make them smile! I know that comments on my blog make me smile!

2. To learn about colour

I am really interested in working with colour palettes, but I am also interesting in learning about the history of colour. Simple Things magazine have an article this month with extracts from Colour a Journey by Victoria Alexander, which I think is a good starting point...

3. Learn how to take better pictures

When I made bags I learnt the best way to take photos of my work, but quilts are proving to be more elusive.... I really want to improve the quality of my pictures so they properly reflect my work....

Setting 3 means I am more likely to succeed - and not a diet in sight!
